SSD Buying Guide: Capacity, Interface and Real Use
Choose solid state storage based on capacity, workload, interface and the devices you own.
Capacity comes first
Estimate space for the operating system, applications and game library, leaving room for updates and working files. A drive that is nearly full is inconvenient regardless of its peak speed.
SATA and NVMe
SATA SSDs improve everyday responsiveness over hard drives. NVMe uses PCIe and can deliver higher sequential speeds, though game loading does not always scale with headline numbers.
Check compatibility and backup
M.2 is a form factor, not a guaranteed interface. Confirm motherboard support and slot sharing. Any drive can fail, so keep a separate backup of important files. See our PC build guide.
